Moving Checklist

  1. 1-3 Months before your move

    1. Schedule a survey with Mover Services Inc. – Contact Mover Services to get a free virtual or in-home estimate! From there Mover Services will guide you on the best way to handle your move.
    2. Do a complete in-home inventory – Decide what items will be moved and what items will be donated or thrown away. This inventory will help ensure that nothing gets left behind and can also guide you in estimating the number of boxes and packing materials needed.
    3. Clear out all Unwanted goods – Moving is the opportunity to start fresh and declutter your residence. Prior to your move is the perfect time to hold a garage sale or donate items to loved ones or charity. 
    4. Safely dispose of all flammable/toxic substances – Mover Services Inc. is unable to move flammable/toxic substances. You can reach out to your Mover Services representative to learn more on how to safely dispose of these substances. 
    5. Send notice of your new address – Update your new address to the following locations: Post Office, Voter Registration, Medical/Dental Providers, Insurance Providers, Educators, Credit Card Companies, Banks, DMV, Social Security Administration, Insurance Providers, Employers, Accountants, Subscription Services, & your favorite online shopping services. 
    6. Contact your utility/service companies – Arrange to have your gas, water, waste, electricity, cable and data either shut off or updated to reflect your new address. Likewise, it is advised to cancel or change your homeowners or renters’ insurance, gardeners, landscapers, pool cleaners, and gym membership. Arrange to have new services set up at your new location. 
    7. Contact your children’s schools – Notify your children’s school that they will be moving. Arrange to get any transcripts or other documents needed for their new school. 
    8. Give Notice (For renters) – Notify your landlord that you will be moving out. This is recommended to be done 60 days prior to move date but this can vary between states and lease agreements. Arrange to have a final walkthrough and get your security deposit back. 
    9. Start using up your perishable food items – Before moving is the perfect time to use up freezer/fridge/pantry stock for cost efficiency. It is recommended to use up as much perishable food items as possible prior to moving as MSI is unable to move perishable food.
    10. Determine if a parking permit is needed for Move Day – Contact your Mover Services Inc. representative to see if a parking permit is needed.
    11. Gather Packing Materials and begin packing your items (if Mover Services is not doing it) – For more information on how to pack please see our Residential Packing Guide
    12. Label as you pack (If Mover Services is not doing it)– It is advised to label your boxes as you pack them for easy identification for the movers and for quickly finding items while unpacking. 
    13. Request time off as needed – Even the most organized moves take time. It is advised to take time off for the day(s) of your move. Likewise make arrangements for young children or pets as needed.
  2. 1-2 Weeks before your move

    1. Confirm your move – Mover Services Inc. will reach out prior to your move to confirm date and time. If you need to make any changes, please contact Mover Services Inc as soon as possible. 
    2. Alert Neighbors – Let your neighbors know that movers and trucks will be coming. If there is not much room for moving trucks, ask your neighbors if they can move their cars for move day. 
    3. Pack essentials and clothes for yourself – It is advised to pack clothes, toiletries and other items for immediate use after moving into your new location. Also, take this time to refill prescriptions as needed. 
    4. Collect important documents – Important documents are advised to travel with you and not with MSI. Collect records such as Birth Certificates, Marriage Licenses, Automobile Title and Registrations, Insurance Papers, Bank Records, Medical Records, School Records, Vet Records, etc. 
    5. Make repairs to the old place – Whether you are ending a lease or selling, it’s advised to touch up your old location. Repair tiny damages such as walls, floorboards or other small damages. 
    6. Sketch a Layout of your New Home – Show a layout of your new home to the movers so they know where to place heavy items to your liking so they won’t have to be moved later. 
  3. Day before your move

    1. Treat yourself and Relax – While Mover Services takes the frustration out of moving, we understand that it can still be a stressful time. Take this time to go out for a bite to eat or order takeout and treat yourself. 
  4. Move Day

    1. Let Mover Services do the heavy lifting – Mover Services will do what we do best. Ensure an efficient careful move of your belongings. Our team of professionals will have you moved out of your location in no time.  
    2. Close Up – Once Mover Services has loaded all of your items, do a final walkthrough of your residence. Ensure all lights, water, Air and amenities are turned off. Return your keys if needed. 
    3. Enjoy your new home – Congratulations on your new residence, by now you should be at your new spot. Relax and enjoy the new scenery.
